Two teenage illegals broke out of a detention facility in Illinois and carjacked a 91-year-old Navy veteran who was picking up a prescription at a local Walmart.

The good news is that the two Guatemalans, ages 16 and 17, were eventually caught, according to an exclusive report in The Daily Mail. The bad news is that despite their crimes, they will remain in the United States.

In a desperate attempt to keep up with the surge of unaccompanied Central American children illegally crossing into the United States through Mexico, the Obama administration has been flying the minors to detention centers across the country for processing and housing if they have no U.S. family to take them in.

The teenagers were being held at the Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. You may recall Democratic Mayor Rahm Emanuel opened his arms to welcome the minors, saying he would take in as many as 1,000.

“While we have our own challenges at home, we cannot turn our backs on children that are fleeing dangerous conditions,” Emanuel said in July, according to Fox News.

It may seem ironic that the minors were brought to one of the most dangerous cities in America, but a few appear to have imported some of the danger they were fleeing. The academy serves as a shelter for troubled youth, taking in unaccompanied minors with mental health issues and security risks, according to The Mail.

Questions remaining over whether locals were aware that some of the minors were deemed security risks, or what security measures the facility employed to counter the threats, but comparisons to the 1980 Mariel boatlift, when thousands of criminals and mentally ill Cubans came to America after then-Cuban President Fidel Castro opened prisons, are not far-fetched.

The teenagers escaped from the facility on Wednesday, carjacked another victim and drove more than 160 miles to Moline, Ill., where they attacked the elderly Navy vet, according to The Mail.

Police finally caught up with the criminals in Iowa City, Iowa, another 60 miles away, where they’re being held until they’re sent back to Illinois to face criminal charges.

The vet was unharmed, although he was shaken up over the incident, The Mail reported.
