‘Iron Man’ Robert Downey Jr. surprises US troops with unique gift

Robert Downey Jr. makes a living looking cool on film in blockbusters like “Sherlock Holmes” and “The Avengers.”

As it happens, he’s pretty cool in real life, too.

Downey proved that recently by arranging a free early screening of his latest movie, “The Judge,” for U.S. military personnel and their families at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

But that’s not all. He also showed up in person to the screening, signed autographs, and posed for pictures after the film.

Downey told reporters that he wanted to do something for the men and women that protect his freedom to pursue his career.

Robert Downey Jr small“They’re keeping us safe. They’re allowing us to have the sort of freedoms and lifestyle that, you know, we can occasionally take for granted,” he said.

Downey posted pictures on Facebook of himself with base personnel and the military challenge coin he was given during the visit.

“For me, it’s just a way of reminding myself that there are people out there every day putting their lives on the line so I can go out and make movies,” Downey said. “It’s their sacrifice that allows us to have that freedom.”

Although Hollywood often appears to be completely dominated by liberal elites, Downey’s support for our military servicemen and women serves as a welcome reminder that respect for the armed forces isn’t completely dead in Tinseltown.

In addition to Downey, “The Judge” stars Robert Duvall and Vera Farmiga. It officially opens Oct. 10, but some theatres will have late-night showings tonight.
