Dems’ secret weapon for November; conservatives SHOULD take this seriously

This will restore your faith in the Republic – and the IRS.

liljon1008spliffThe allegedly non-partisan group Rock the Vote is out with a new PSA video aimed at encouraging young voters to turn out for November’s midterm elections by featuring a host of the liberal and famous (and the merely annoying) pushing a host of non-partisan causes like gutting the Second Amendment, promoting abortion and forcing states to accept homosexual marriage.

It’s really as non-partisan as it gets for a non-profit organization that’s somehow escaped the wrath of the IRS in the Age of Obama.

Master of ceremonies is rapper cum political sage Lil Jon with “Turn Out for What?” (a remix of his paean to drug use “Turn Down for What?”). He demonstrates the fruits of political engagement by toking on a bazooka-sized joint and coughing for marijuana legalization.

Joining him are cognoscenti like Whoopi Goldberg, Darren Criss of “Glee,”  Sophia Bush of NBC’s “Chicago PD,” and Natasha Lyonne of Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black.” (Her cause, of course, is prison reform.)

There are others, but no non-partisan PSA would be complete without Lena Dunham, the “Girls” creator noteworthy for appearing naked on her own show. She doesn’t, thankfully, do that here (even Democrats have some sense), but the shots of her dancing in her skivvies are enough to make you thank God for those boys who hit the Normandy beaches and the men who bled at Valley Forge.

If they didn’t do it so the producer and star of “Girls” could take off her clothes for a non-partisan cause, what did they do it for?

What’s interesting about it, as always, is the glaring hypocrisy of the Obama years.

The White House’s minions at the IRS can bring the hammer down on people like True the Vote founder Catherine Engelbrecht, various tea party organizations and any group that used the words “constitution,” “patriot” or “9/11” in its name, but the non-partisan Rock the Vote dances merrily along, pushing those non-partisan issues like citizenship for illegal immigrants and sacrificing the American coal industry to the ephemeral god of Climate Change.

The big question, of course, is will it work. Will the mouthwatering sight of Lena Dunham’s considerable bulk drive young men to the polls? (The jury’s still out on how the fantasy of losing her virginity to a Barack Obama lever in the 2012 election played out.) Will Lil Jon’s stereotypically huge spliff prove irresistible to the hordes of minorities and liberal women voters Democrats need to win in November?

(And speaking of hypocrisy, Florida’s former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist is sure hoping the ad works in his new incarnation as a soulless Democrat. The campaign is betting heavily on a campus get-out-the-vote effort helped by a proposal to legalize medical marijuana. Crist, of course, favors marijuana now in a way he never did when he locked people up for it as state attorney general, or when he signed some of the country’s harshest marijuana bills when he was governor. But he was a Republican then, too.)

History and polls show the Democrat base tends to ignore midterm elections — too complicated apparently, and not nearly as sexy as voting for president, so will the video message really rock the vote? Will the final message of the PSA actually sink in?

“I wanna impress my friends,” comic and “Late Night with Seth Myers” band leader Fred Armisen tells the camera. “That’s the only reason to ever do anything.”

The video will restore your faith in the Republic.

Really.
