Sometimes the classics are the hardest to sing, as icon Tony Bennett found out Monday during the seventh inning stretch of the San Francisco Giants-Washington Nationals playoff game.
Belting out “God Bless America,” 88-year-old Bennett took poetic license with some of the lyrics.
Instead of “to the oceans, white with foam,” the legend sang “to the oceans, bright with gold.”
Twitter lit up with both praise and condemnation for botching one of America’s most beloved songs.
Look, if Tony Bennett says those are the words, THOSE ARE THE WORDS.

Only Tony Bennett could botch the lyrics to God Bless America and still look cool.

Maybe it wasn’t so bad after all, according to these tweets: Â

Tony Bennett messed up the words to “God Bless America.” Twitter has decided that’s OK because he’s Tony Bennett. Go about your lives. — Big League Stew (@bigleaguestew) October 6, 2014
