A new Target ad prominently features a lesbian couple preparing a nursery for the birth of a child.
“I’m Amanda, and I’m Cat,” the women say at the start of the ad. “And we’re having a baby!”
The ad, “Baby Digs: The Magic of Space,” features Amanda Deibert, an actress and writer, and Cat Staggs, a comic book illustrator, who share their hopes and dreams for their child.
The couple married in Central Park three years ago and their appearance in the ad was compensated with a fully furnished Target nursery, according to lesbian entertainment blog AfterEllen.com.
The ad has generated a spirited discussion with comments such as these, according to Christian News:
“This commercial has given me such joy in being reminded that there are other people like us, other people that are having families, and that are being recognized as such,” wrote one lesbian woman from Utah.
“No, you two are not having a baby. One of you is having a baby . . . and then will be raising that baby in a broken home where no father is present,” another stated. “Why do you put yourselves above the needs of your child? And why does Target support putting adults’ desires above children in our society?”
This isn’t Target’s first commercial geared toward the LGBT community. Last month, the “Made to Matter” product line was introduced in an ad showing a gay couple painting with a child, though they weren’t the focal point of the spot. The ad was released after several anti-gay groups’ boycotted the retail giant when the company publicly supported marriage equality, according to the Huffington Post.
