Wasserman Schultz: Rick Scott has given us the back of his hand: You remember a few weeks ago when DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz caused an uproar in saying Wisconsin Gov ““Scott Walker has given women the back of his hand”? Turns out the overheated rhetoric was not entirely new. The south Florida congresswoman said the something similar about Gov. Rick Scott while attending Charlie Crist’s primary victory party in Fort Lauderdale last month – before the Scott Walker comment blew up – although perhaps minus the domestic violence implication. Jeb finding Common Core, immigration reform tough sell to conservatives: Jeb Bush learned a lesson this week as he continues to kick around running for president in 2016: it’s not his father’s Republican Party anymore and it’s also not his brother’s. After holding a fundraiser for Senate candidates in Tampa earlier this week, Bush headed to North Carolina to campaign with Thom Tillis. As Republicans look to take back the Senate from Democrat control, Tillis is in a key race as he looks to take down Kay Hagan. Read more
FL teachers union attack on poor, disabled student scholarships fails — for now: Tens of thousands of economically disadvantaged students and many disabled school children can breathe a collective sigh of relief – for now. A state judge threw out a teachers’ union-backed lawsuit Wednesday aimed at killing scholarship programs that afforded more than 60,000 kids the opportunity to attend private schools. Chief Circuit Court Judge Charles Francis dismissed the lawsuit for lack of standing. Read more
Charlie Crist nowhere to be found in Southwest Florida: On Sept. 3, Gov. Rick Scott visited a Naples hardware store on his fourth public visit to Southwest Florida in about as many weeks. It’s been months since Democratic opponent Charlie Crist made a similar hand-shaking, baby-holding stump stop in the area. While Crist’s campaign says he and lieutenant governor nominee Annette Taddeo have held meetings in the last few weeks, the kind of public stops candidates are known for have been nonexistent here. GOP sets aside $2.6 million for ads in Miami congressional race: The National Republican Congressional Committee said this week that it plans to spend $2.6 million in advertising in the contested race for Florida’s 26th district. That’s more than the $1.4 million the NRCC originally said it would use to go after U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia, a Miami Democrat — and more than the $900,000-plus the GOP’s counterparts, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, has said it expects to spend.
