A New York news anchor didn’t know the mic was on and the live camera rolling on Wednesday when he and a reporter cursed and joked about government assistance programs.
News 12 The Bronx anchor Matt Pieper and reporter Amy Yensi were preparing to report on the need for school crossing guards in certain areas, according to TV Spy, when they made the following remarks:
Pieper: And Dave wants you to also mention that parents do their f**king jobs and walk their little kids to school on their own and not rely on everyone else kind of like people rely on government assistance for their entire lives. And bye Felicia. I actually added the part about government assistance but it’s true. I mean, how old are these kids?
Yensi: I think I qualify for government assistance (laughs)
Pieper: Just check that box, girl
Social media lit up with these comments like these posted on the News 12 Facebook page:
Canen Solae C I Was Watching Matt Piper He Will Be Suspended By The Morning ..Everyone Is Not taking advantage of Government Assistance some people Actually need the help ,just as well as the children that have to walk them selfs to school in the morning because some of us or single moms with no help & some are Parents have to be at work by 6:30 & wanna make sure our kids are safe going to school
Anne Ledesma Good to know I was not the only one that heard the f bomb…both their comments were unnecessary especially when talking about children and people that depend on food stamps…I know of old people that have worked their entire life and get pennies from retirement not cool…and to think I liked Amy and Matt… #dontwanttoseetheminthemorningnomore
Several hours later, News 12 issued this statement on its Facebook page:
News anchors should know — there’s no such thing as a personal conversation when you’re wearing a microphone.
