In an effort to curry favor with Muslim countries in the battle against Islamic State militants, President Barack Obama heaped praise upon Islam during Wednesday’s speech before the United Nations.

But did Obama take things a little too far when he touted a controversial cleric?

The president quoted Sheikh Abdallah bin Bayyah, implying the cleric is a moderate Muslim leader.

“Look at the new Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies—Sheikh bin Bayyah described its purpose: ‘We must declare war on war, so the outcome will be peace upon peace,’” Obama said.

An inspiring quote until you consider the cleric’s group reportedly backed a fatwa calling for violent jihad against American soldiers in 2004, as Fox News host Megyn Kelly reminded viewers on Wednesday’s show.

Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, was a guest on “The Kelly File” and slammed the president for “shoving down Muslim throats this silver-bearded theocrat.”

“The narrative in this administration is against the moderates, and it’s actually promoting the status quo,” Jasser said.

He added that Obama is out to “take on the tactic of terror” instead of taking on the troubling Islamic ideology behind terrorism.
