A PC-obsessed New York high school ordered a National Guard recruiter to stop giving out promotional T-shirts because the image of an American citizen-soldier holding a gun is too frightening for the school’s fragile youth.
The shameful incident took place Friday at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School just outside Albany after teachers complained about the weapons, according to Fox News.
“Wearing pictures of weapons brings to mind those things in our society that are not pertinent to education,” district interim Superintendent Alan McCartney told the Albany Times Union.
“A pointed gun is just not appropriate for a high school,” he told Fox News’ Todd Starnes.
The National Guard is a military force – hundreds of thousands of guardsmen served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Carrying a weapon is part of what people in the military do.
The teachers who complained might be too dense, or too liberal, to acknowledge that. Administrators like McCartney might be too scared of their teachers or bad PR to acknowledge it.
In the utter obtuseness of his defense of the T-shirt ban, McCartney sounds exactly like a man who’s spent his working life in America’s public education system. It’s a unique place where adults build careers by not knowing the difference between right and wrong.
“Where do you draw the line?” McCartney said, according to Starnes. “Is it OK to wear this weapon because it’s a National Guardsman wielding it? (But it’s not OK) if you’ve got a T-shirt on from a video game that shows somebody aiming at gun at somebody’s head?”
Well, yes, Superintendent. Over-the-top crazy as that sounds, that’s exactly right.
If that’s too hard to understand, one parent explained it to a CBS reporter:
“The way I see it, the men and women who serve and protect us, they don’t walk around without weapons … and there’s a big difference between violent crime and people who serve us and keep us safe and keep our freedom.”
She’s just a mom, though. She’s not a public school teacher — or a superintendent.
