White House fence-jumper, makes it inside presidential residence, causes real scare, evacuation

For the second time in as many weeks, a man jumped the White House fence and this one made it all the way inside the “North Portico doors of the presidential residence,” the Secret Service told the Associated Press.

Friday evening around 7 pm, just minutes after the president and his daughters had boarded Marine One for a weekend at Camp David, Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, of Copperas Cove, Texas entered the columned entrance that looks out over Pennsylvania Avenue before being apprehended by Secret Service.

“White House staffers and Associated Press journalists were rushed into the basement and out a side exit to a nearby street by Secret Service agents,” according to FoxNews’ AP report.

The incident prompted an evacuation and concerns about the competence of the Secret Service. An intruder jumped the fence last week in a similar location, but didn’t get as far.

Fox News reported:

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who chairs the House Oversight Committee’s subpanel on national security, said it was “totally unacceptable” that the fence-jumper made it inside the White House. Chaffetz said he’s been investigating the Secret Service for more than a year and that there have been many security breaches that were never publicly reported.

“Unfortunately, they are failing to do their job,” Chaffetz said in an email to the AP. “There are good men and women, but the Secret Service leadership has a lot of questions to answer.”

An instagram posted from the scene shows the chaos outside as an officer shooed everybody across the street to the park..

“Everybody out right now!” a Secret Service agent outside the gate shouted to the crowd. “Right now … Everybody, go back! Everybody in the park!”
