States push for long-overdue laws requiring ALL students to pass US citizenship test

When it comes to civics and government affairs, Americans don’t know much.

Any fan of the “Watters’ World” feature on “The O’Reilly Factor” can attest to the unfortunate reality, but a Republican lawmaker in Arizona is out to change it.

State Rep. Steve Montenegro wants to require students in his state to pass the same 100-question civics test immigrant applicants must pass to become U.S. citizens, according to The Arizona Republic.

“Every single student in Arizona and across the United States of America should have basic knowledge and understanding of American government,” Montenegro said at a press conference Wednesday. “Civics is just common sense. So, this Civics Education Initiative… is a common-sense approach at achieving that goal.”

The legislation has yet to be written — the state legislature does not reconvene until January — but schools will likely be allowed to determine how to administer the test, the Republic reported.

Newsweek magazine had 1,000 U.S. citizens take the official citizenship test in March 2011 and 38 percent of them failed — a number that may strike viewers of “Watters’ World” as surprisingly low, since the man-on-the street style videos usually highlight some head-scratching ignorance.

The results produced some striking facts; one example being that nearly 3 out of 4 Americans taking the test had no idea why we fought the Cold War.

Arizona is not the only state looking to require students to pass the citizenship test before getting their high school diploma. Missouri and South Carolina are also considering similar proposals.

An idea that’s well overdue!
