Michelle Obama calls her hubby’s presidency ‘among the nation’s greatest’; points out ‘full-blown crisis’ under Bush

Michelle Obama defended her husband’s 2008 campaign promise of hope and change during a Democratic campaign event in Washington Thursday.

“While we still have plenty of work to do, we have truly made so much of that change we were talking about,” the first lady said, arguing that her husband’s presidency has been “among the nation’s greatest,” according to the Washington Examiner.

Obama quickly pointed out that the last six years should not be judged on their own, however, but rather in the context of “the mess” left behind by President Bush.

Michelle Obama“When Barack first took office, and took a look at the mess he’d been handed [he] wondered what on Earth he had gotten himself into,” she said.

“Let me just take you back to how bad things were back then. We were in full-blown crisis mode — do you remember that?” she asked before making it clear that she was referring to the economy.

If her listeners did not remember, it is perhaps because the nation is still in full-blown crisis mode, simultaneously concerned about the resurgence of global terror, the flood of illegal immigration, and Russia’s renewed adventurism – topics which the first lady did not, apparently, address.

She added that her husband’s administration has reversed the nation’s economic decline as well as enhanced the popular perception of women and minorities as capable of holding offices such as president or Supreme Court justice.

“When folks ask me whether I still believe everything we said about change and hope back in 2008,” she said, “I tell them that I believe it more strongly now than ever before, because, look, I’ve seen it with my own eyes.”

If that’s true, one wonders why people keep asking her that.
