Obama vowed to get rid of Bush’s ‘blank-check’ law — until he needed it to shun Congress

He wanted to repeal the use of force law before he wanted to use it.

As recently as last year, President Obama vowed to get rid of the Bush-era bill Authorized Use of Military Force bill, according to the Washington Times. In the 2008 primaries, leftist Democrats pounded Hillary Clinton for her vote in favor of the bill.

Now, the man who defeated her then wants to use that same authorization to take the country to war without consulting Congress. Even by Democrat revisionist history standards, the turnaround it breathtaking for its cynicism and hypocrisy.

As recently as last year, in that big address about national security at West Point that the mainstreamers practically swooned over, Obama said:

“The AUMF is now nearly 12 years old,” he said, according to the Washington Times. “Unless we discipline our thinking, our definitions, our actions, we may be drawn into more wars we don’t need to fight, or continue to grant presidents unbound powers more suited for traditional armed conflicts between nation states.”

That was then. This is now.

In his own pursuit of “unbound powers,” Obama no longer wants the repeal of the use of force resolution, just to “refine” it, an administration official told Foreign Policy’s The Cable last week.

“Part of the process of refining the 2001 AUMF would be to ensure that the president continues to have the authorities he needs to address the threat posed by ISIL, either through refining that statute or through some other legislative authority,” the official said.

Back when a Republican was president, liberal Democrats called talk like that a “blank check” to go to war.

But for this president doesn’t even think he needs that.

In another much-ballyhooed speech last week,  Obama said he would welcome “congressional support for this effort in order to show the world that Americans are united in confronting this danger.”

That’s Obama-speak for congressional obedience to the political dictates of a disastrous presidency.

Last year he wanted to repeal the law. This week he wants to kill in its name. And he expects Americans of every political stripe to swallow it.

“Right” or “wrong” isn’t the word for decisions in the Obama White House.

Incoherent is.
