Sitting next to his on-air partner of almost nine years, an Illinois television news anchorman shared with their viewers Thursday the heartbreaking news that he has only four to six months to live.
WCIA anchor Dave Benton, 51, told viewers that he had a recurrence of brain cancer and the tumor is too big for surgery or radiation. He said he’ll try a new treatment to try to slow its growth, but doctors have told him he has “anywhere from four-to-six months before things turn bad.”
As tragic as the news was, Benton’s awe inspiring strength carried the moment.
“I’m a born again Christian, and I believe that I’m in God’s hands,” he said with conviction. “I am at peace and I know he’s going to take care of the days ahead and that the goal here is to have the best ones possible.”
Benton is married with two grown children and said he will continue to work as long as he’s able.
“I’m grateful for the outpouring of support, prayers and cards,” he told viewers. “It’s meant the world to me. It’s changed my life.”
