House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took partisan rhetoric to a new extreme Friday, when she warned of impending doom if the Republican Party gains control of the U.S. Senate in November’s elections.
The Democratic lawmaker was asked during an appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher” why it matters who controls the upper house.
“It would be very important for the Democrats to retain control of the Senate,” she said. “Civilization as we know it today would be in jeopardy if Republicans win the Senate.”
Then she let out a laugh that sounded simply maniacal.
Pelosi apparently did not pay attention the day President Obama lectured the nation about such negative discourse and called for a new era of civility in politics.
“At a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized, at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do, it’s important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds,” Obama said in 2011 after former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot.
Not to be outdone by Pelosi’s hyperbole, Maher said the Republican Party was akin to Islamic State terrorists in posing a threat to global civilization.
