Outrage! Army officer denied entry to daughter’s high school because of his uniform

A Michigan Army officer trying to help his daughter at school was told by a security guard he couldn’t enter wearing his uniform.

Lt. Col. Sherwood Baker, who has served in the Army for 24 years, stopped by the Rochester Adams High School to help clear up a schedule issue for his daughter, but was told if he wanted to enter the school he would have to go home and change clothes.

“Before he was allowed in, the security guard stopped him and said, ‘Sorry you’re not allowed in the school,’” his wife, Rachel Ferhadson told Fox 2 in Detroit. “Security told him men and women in uniform weren’t allowed because it may offend another student.”

Outraged, Baker and his wife called the school superintendent’s office from the parking lot and a school employee came out to escort the officer into the school.

The superintendent, Robert Shaner, is a combat veteran and was “appalled” at what had happened. In issuing a statement to Fox 2, he said:

“The district has apologized for any perception that individuals in uniform are not welcome in the school. The district does not have a policy excluding individuals in uniform and will be working with administration and the firm that handles our security to make sure district policies are understood and communicated accurately.”
