Conservatives shred Obama’s ‘fundamentally unserious’ speech aimed at saving a ‘lost presidency’

At least he has a strategy now.

Even if it’s just a strategy to “save a lost presidency.”

That was how Fox News analyst and conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer described President Obama’s much-hyped speech to the nation Wednesday night to outline the country’s latest efforts to fight the Islamic terrorists that keep attacking.

“This was a political speech in the guise of a military plan,” Krauthammer said on Fox News’ “Special Report.” “This is a president trying to save a collapsed presidency.”

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called the speech “fundamentally unserious.”

“What we didn’t see tonight was a commander in chief focused on U.S. national security interests who stood up and said there are radical Islamic terrorists who have declared war on the United States, who are murdering Christians, who have murdered two American journalists, and who have promised to take jihad to America, and we will respond with overwhelming air force to take them out,” he said on Fox News “The Kelly File.”

Other critics argued that pretty much everything Obama outlined Wednesday amounts to about the same strategy against terrorism Bill Clinton used in the years before 9/11:

Use air strikes against terrorists when we can find them; cajole friendly governments to hit them on the ground, send humanitarian aid to their victims, and otherwise treat the whole thing like a law enforcement issue.

“We will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are,” President Obama Obama declared — sounding like his Democratic predecessor.

megynkelly0911The difference between Obama and those days of the 1999s, though, is that Obama’s speech was trying to make up for years of pretending “the tide of war is receding” and that “al Qaeda is on the run.” It was also trying erase an astonishingly bad month  for the country and his presidency highlighted by the Internet-publicized beheadings of two Americans by Islamist terrorists and Obama’s own pathetic admission that a country that has been at war for at least 13 years suddenly doesn’t have a strategy for the latest enemy to crop up in it.

All of it against the backdrop of the president on Martha’s Vineyard without a care in the world.

One thing we did see though, was the Obama pomposity on full display, starting with his explanation that the terrorists who call themselves “Islamic State” are neither “Islamic” nor a “State.” Since most the of the American public doesn’t give much of a damn what the savages are calling themselves these days, it probably wasn’t effective.

But conservative columnist Ann Coulter got a kick out of it.
