Montel Williams makes impassioned plea for Marine’s release; slams Kerry, Holder’s inaction

Famed talk show host Montel Williams gave an impassioned plea for the release of imprisoned Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi on national TV Thursday.

Speaking on Fox News Channel’s “On the Record” with Greta Van Susteren, the 22-year Navy veteran spoke vigorously on behalf of the Marine imprisoned in Mexico because of a driving error.

Anyone viewing the tape that Van Susteren made of the confusing signage along the Mexican-American border could easily have made the same mistake, Williams said, and because  several weapons were in the car, could wind up in the same predicament.

The Naval Academy graduate said that politicians are too distracted by global issues to pay Tahmooressi any attention, “but this is a soldier who could use the help of Secretary Kerry. He could use the help of Eric Holder, reaching out to the Attorney General of Mexico and saying, ‘Look, we’re not trying to tell you to change your law…but your law itself states there had to be intent…and it’s clear that this was done by mistake.”

Williams told viewers that Tahmooressi suffered from a mental illness and asked, “Is it appropriate and compassionate to keep this man in jail?”

Tahmooressi’s mother had asked Williams several months ago to intercede on behalf of her son, telling him that she prayed for his daughter every night, who’s a victim of lymphoma.

Williams wrote a letter to Mexico’s president, attorney general and U.S. ambassador explaining why Tahmooressi should be released on humanitarian grounds.

He received a response the next day from the Minister for Press and Public Affairs, which included documents justifying Mexico’s case, The Blaze reported.

“While I appreciate the Mexican Embassy’s ‘response’ it was non-responsive to the letter I sent. Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi suffers from severe PTSD – he has now been confined for more than 5 months,” Williams said in a statement. “The very nature of PTSD is that its severity often increases over time without treatment. The Mexican Government has provided no such treatment.”

A nationwide petition signed by more than 134,000 people, and sent to the White House last week, called on President Obama to demand the immediate release of this decorated Marine who served two tours in Afghanistan, but received only a tepid response.

In the meantime, Tahmooressi has languished in solitary confinement in a Mexican jail for more than 150 days, and justice has not been served.
