Michelle Obama’s nutrition nannies want to ruin your Labor Day s’mores

S’mores made with fruit? Really?

In honor of “National Roasted Marshmallow Day” on August 30, the U.S. Forest Service posted an article Friday that not only included some basic safety tips, but some not-so-subtle hints on how to keep kids from becoming obese while enjoying the gooey treat.

“Even if the kids – including us older ones – insist on more traditional s’mores, there are some healthy tricks,” the Forest Service wrote. “Grill thin slices of pineapple and substitute chocolate for the sweet, warm fruit. You will still get a tasty treat but by substituting with fruit, it is healthier – as long as you watch the amount of marshmallows used. If you want to cut down even more on calories, try using slices of angel food cake instead of graham crackers.”

Isn’t that illegal?

The s’more first appeared in the 1927 Girl Scouts Handbook. Here’s the recipe, from Old School Pastry:

“Some More”
• 8 Sticks
• 16 graham crackers
• 8 bars plain chocolate (any of the good plain brands broken in two)
• 16 marshmallows
Toast the marshmallows over the coals to a crisp gooey state and then put them inside a graham cracker and chocolate bar sandwich. The heat of the marshmallow between the halves of the chocolate bar will melt the chocolate a bit. Though it tastes like “some more” one is really enough.

Not one mention of pineapple. Or fruit.

The article speaks of safety, of course. After all, it WAS a Forest Service employee who wrote it.

But Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative is imprinted firmly in its dietary suggestion:

“Another way to limit the amount of marshmallows used is to substitute them with marshmallow crème, a spreadable version of marshmallows that helps you more easily regulate portion. For healthier treats, use large strawberries, apple slices, banana chucks, pineapple or other fruit. Put a piece of fruit on a roasting stick, dip quickly in the crème and roast over indirect heat until a delicious golden brown. You’re still having campfire fun, but the focus is on a healthier evening snack.”

Twitter users weren’t amused. Here are some reactions to the article:
