After an increasing amount of public demand for “gun-free zones,” this Texas school district is taking matters into its own hands– literally.
Instead of putting up more “gun free zone” signs,” the Argyle School district will be embracing self-protection, CW33 reports. The district will be allowing certain members of school staff to carry a gun after they obtain a permit and pass a basic training session, safety course and psychological evaluation.
This is taking place thanks to the Protection of Texas Children Act, which Gov. Rick Perry signed into law in 2013.
While the mainstream media has mixed feelings, some parents seem confident.
“I think if a tragedy does occur, lives can be saved by guns being in the right hands, and I think the teachers here might be able to stop something like that and life can be saved,” parent Lacey Fenoglio told CW33.
It will be interesting to see how this new strategy will pan out. Activist groups like Mom’s Demand Action for Gun Sense in America haven’t put any new ideas out there. They spend their time harassing grocery chains and restaurants, demanding them to become gun-free zones. Ironically, criminals never get the memo.
What will better protect our kids in the classroom? Will it be an increased number of gun-free zone signs or an increased number of responsible concealed carry teachers?
Considering the morbid failure of gun-free zones in the past, I’m going to go with the latter.
