Muslims condemn ISIS as ‘enemies of humanity’ at Michigan rally

Muslim leaders gathered in Michigan Monday to speak out against the militant group ISIS in Syria and Iraq, saying the group doesn’t represent their beliefs.

ISIS members are “crazy criminals who are abusing our religion,” Imam Mohammed Elahi of the Islamic House of Wisdom in Dearborn Heights told the Detroit Free Press. “You’re a bunch of gangsters … you’re not Islamic.”

About 50 attended the rally organized by imams with the Michigan Muslim Community Council, with both Sunni and Shia speaking against the ISIS terrorists.

“The beheading of James Foley … is a clear violation of the holy Quran and the teachings of Prophet Mohammed,” said Imam Mustapha Elturk, who cochairs along with Elahi the Imams Council of the Michigan Muslim Community Council. “ISIS neither represents Islam nor Muslims.”

Osama Siblani, publisher of Arab American News in Dearborn, said members of ISIS “are the enemies of humanity.”

“ISIS is a terrorist group,” said Imam Ali Ali, religious leader of the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs, a Canton mosque. “They don’t speak in the name of Islam, in the name of Muslims, in the name of humanity.”

This wasn’t the first time the imams have held such an anti-ISIS event. It was actually the third in Dearborn this summer, according to the Free Press, which reported that hundreds attended the other two events.

Twitter response was supportive, but skeptical according to these tweets:

It’s a good start.
