Forget ‘medically necessary,’ Obamacare now covers sex reassignment surgeries

If you’re having a gender identity crisis and need to make some changes, look no further. Obamacare’s got you covered.

Obamacare removed the bar for those suffering from pre-existing conditions, forcing insurance companies to accept everyone. Because of his “benevolent” move, hopeless, transgender individuals now have the option of getting medial coverage for their “necessary” procedures and supplements, the Daily Beast reports.

Prior to Obamacare, some transgender Americans (and by some, we mean less than half a percent of the U.S. population) were denied healthcare coverage because their “gender identity disorder” was considered a pre-existing condition.

Additionally, “discriminatory” regulations will be banned, and companies will be required to treat transgendered patients the same as everyone else.

Breitbart News quoted from the Daily Beast’s article:

“The federal anti-discrimination regulations have yet to be written, but California insurance regulators have said that companies must treat transgender patients the same as other patients. For example, if plans cover hormones for post-menopausal women, they must also cover them for transgender women. Medicare, the program for the elderly and disabled, lifted its ban on covering sex reassignment surgery earlier this year.”

But some concerns arise over the inevitable slippery slope. Where would we draw the line? What about treating everyone else the same as the transgendered patients?

If anything, it could be reverted back to arguments concerning insurance coverage of plastic surgery and other cosmetic imperfections.

What about women who don’t feel womanly enough? Should insurance companies be required to cover breast implants, limp plumps, and fat transfers? Isn’t that all based off feelings, emotions and self-esteem as well?

Furthermore, providing healthcare coverage for sexual reassignment surgeries will put a serious dent in the pockets of the taxpayers. A procedure to change a female to male can cost over $50,000.

Some conservative policy makers are skeptical of the medical necessity of such procedures.

The Daily Beast quoted Peter Sprigg, senior fellow at the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C.

“We would oppose sex change operations all together,” Sprigg said.” But as a public policy issue, we would feel particularly strongly that taxpayers shouldn’t be asked to pay for it.”

Gender identity crisis is a mental disorder, and mental disorders are something insurance should cover. But should taxpayers have to subsidize the voluntary physical manifestation of these disorders? Some doctors say no.

“You won’t hear it from those championing transgender equality, but controlled and follow-up studies reveal fundamental problems with this movement. When children who reported transgender feelings were tracked without medical or surgical treatment at both Vanderbilt University and London’s Portman Clinic, 70%-80% of them spontaneously lost those feelings. Some 25% did have persisting feelings; what differentiates those individuals remains to be discerned,” former John Hopkins head psychiatrist, Dr. Paul McHugh wrote.

Sadly enough, many Americans have lost sight of what true insurance is.

The truth is, you can’t fix a mental problem by physically altering someone’s body. If it’s about self-esteem, policy makers should explore other routes to deal with the issue rather than expectantly waiting for the taxpayer to empty their pockets to support questionable lifestyle choices.
