MTV used its Video Music Awards ceremony Sunday as a platform to air a public service announcement featuring the protests in Ferguson, Mo., on the heels of the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
The recent events fit the narrative of the “Look Different” campaign, which MTV developed along with organizations including the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP, the National Council of La Raza and the Southern Poverty Law Center, according to the Washington Post.
Hoping to start a discussion on racial stereotypes, MTV aired the two spots before and during the awards ceremony. The first featured young people describing the stereotypes they’ve faced:
The second featured chants of, “Hands up, don’t shoot,” which have become the trademark of the Ferguson protests:
According to an Associated Press report, there was no mention of the pre-party shooting of rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight earlier in the day, or the beheading of an American journalist last week allegedly by a British rapper.
Marion “Suge” Knight, former CEO of Death Row Records, was attending a pre-awards party hosted by rapper Chris Brown at a West Hollywood club where he was reportedly shot six times, according to The Daily Caller. Knight underwent surgery and is recovering, along with two other people who were also wounded.
The failure to mention the other events didn’t go unnoticed by Twitter users, who tweeted:
