Letting their money speak as loudly as their words, supporters of the officer who shot 18-year-old Michael Brown have exceeded the donations raised for Brown’s family.
More than $338,000 has been raised through two crowd-funding pages set up for Officer Darren Wilson, while about $215,000 has been raised in support of Brown, according to USA Today.
Details are beginning to emerge about what really happened in the middle of a Ferguson, Mo., street, and they tell a different story than the version that first came to light in what has become an all-too-familiar rush to judgment.
Supports for Wilson held a rally Saturday in south St. Louis to show they believe the officer’s actions were justified, USA Today reported.
“Many of us have received death threats toward ourselves and our families,” one unnamed speaker said, according to USA Today. “We will not hide. We will no longer live in fear … If you support Darren Wilson, make your voices heard.”
The speaker spoke of the media’s preferential for an established narrative that insists Wilson was motivated by racism when he shot the unarmed teenager.
And showed her mistrust by saying how she will answer reporters who will “inevitably ask for my name.”
“You want my name?” she said. “I am Darren Wilson. We are Darren Wilson.”
A number of Support Darren Wilson groups have cropped up on Facebook, while supporters on Twitter are pushing the hashtag: #iamdarrenwilson.
