Police Capt. delivers emotional speech to Ferguson townspeople: ‘I wear this uniform. . . I am sorry’

The new leader of restoring peace and order to embattled Ferguson, Missouri, Cpt. Ron Johnson, delivered an emotional speech on Sunday promising that the death of Michael Brown will not have gone in vain.

Speaking before a packed house at Greater Grace Church, a near teary-eyed State Highway Patrol Chief said “I wear this uniform, and I should stand up here and say that I’m sorry,” which drew a very long round of applause. “I’ll tell you right now, I came in today and saw people cheering and people clapping; this is what the media needs to put on TV.”

He told the crowd that he admitted in an interview the night before that “his heart is heavy.” He had met with Michael Brown’s family and it had brought tears to his eyes.

“This is my neighborhood,” he averred. “You are my family, my friends. And I am you. I will stand to protect you. To protect your right to protest.”

Johnson referenced how Jesus picked up Peter when he fell, and that his own son wore saggy pants, his hat cocked sideways, with tattoos on his arms. “But that is my baby…and we all ought to be thanking the Brown’s for Michael. Because Michael is going to make it better for our sons to be better black men; better for our daughters to be better black women; better for me so I can be a better black father.”

He concluded to a cheering audience by saying, “We need to thank Mike for his life. We need to thank him for the change he is going to make in America. I love you, I stand tall with you and I’ll see you out there.”

But with fury unabated in many Ferguson quarters and with outside instigators exploiting the unrest, the chief has a huge challenge ahead of him.
