Governor orders National Guard into riot-racked Ferguson

Acknowledging that unrest that started over the shooting death of a black teenager by police had descended into criminal chaos, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered the National Guard into the town racked by violence for the past week.

On Sunday night, rioters in the streets of Ferguson battled police with guns and Molotov cocktails, attempting to block roads and overrun the police command post, according to USA Today.

The violence makes a mockery of protesters’ claims they are acting on behalf Michael Brown, the 18-year-old who died Aug. 10 after being shot in what police say was a scuffle for an officer’s gun but critics say was a cold-blooded killing.

Nixon’s statement ordering the guard in described the so-called “protesters” as engaging in “deliberate, coordinated and intensifying violent acts,” according to The New York Times.

“Tonight, a day of hope, prayers, and peaceful protests was marred by the violent criminal acts of an organized and growing number of individuals, many from outside the community and state, whose actions are putting the residents and businesses of Ferguson at risk,” a statement from Nixon’s office said.

“These violent acts are a disservice to the family of Michael Brown and his memory, and to the people of this community who yearn for justice to be served, and to feel safe in their own homes.”
