Shortly after Gov. Rick Perry’s indictment on Friday, Republicans began to “rally ‘round the flag” for the Texan with unexpected help from a major Democratic figure.
Former Obama senior advisor and well-known Democratic strategist David Axelrod tweeted,
Unless he was demonstrably trying to scrap the ethics unit for other than his stated reason, Perry indictment seems pretty sketchy.

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz quickly wrote on his Facebook page,
“Unfortunately, there has been a sad history of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office engaging in politically-motivated prosecutions, and this latest indictment of the governor is extremely questionable. Rick Perry is a friend, he’s a man of integrity – I am proud to stand with Rick Perry. The Texas Constitution gives the governor the power to veto legislation, and a criminal indictment predicated on the exercise of his constitutional authority is, on its face, highly suspect.”
Cruz sent out a tweet encapsulating this, and neighboring Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal also tweeted a message of support.
The lawsuit against @GovernorPerry is a blatant misuse of the judicial system by liberal activists who couldn’t defeat him at the polls.

Even Politico chief economic correspondent Ben White labeled the indictment as “perverse,” according to The Blaze.
It seems quite perverse to indict a governor for exercising his clearly delineated constitutional authority.

Travis County is the home to heavily Democratic Austin, whose Ethics Investigative Unit’s budget was vetoed by Perry after its chief, Rosemary Lehmberg, was convicted of drunken driving and refused to resign.
During his Saturday statement to the press Perry described the indictment as a “farce of prosecution” and his appearance on Sunday talk shows is bound to elicit further colorful epithets.
Looks like even Democrats are agreeing.
