Police Chief rips Obama for his premature remarks on riots

riotsThe director of the national Fraternal Order of Police offered America’s vacationing president some helpful hints about calming the unrest between police and protesters in Ferguson, Mo.: Come back from Martha’s Vineyard and do your job.

“I would contend that discussing police tactics from Martha’s Vineyard is not helpful to ultimately calming the situation,” Jim Pasco told The Hill.

Pasco also objected to the president’s statement criticizing police over the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

“I think what he has to do as president and as a constitutional lawyer is remember that there is a process in the United States, and the process is being followed, for good or for ill, by the police and by the county and by the city and by the prosecutors’ office,” Pasco said.

Following what he called “disturbing” clashes between protesters and police, Obama appealed for “peace and calm on the streets” of Ferguson in a statement Thursday from Martha’s Vineyard.

Pasco took particular issue with the president for ignoring the escalating violence by saying that “there’s no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests” and that it’s unlawful to “throw protesters in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights.”

Tossing Molotov cocktails at police, bashing storefront windows and looting businesses do not constitute a “peaceful protest,” but from the president’s pretentious perch, the reality of the situation may be hard to see.
