Jeb Bush making 1st campaign appearance of year for Florida Gov. Scott: Jeb Bush, the former Republican Florida governor and possible 2016 presidential contender, will be making his first campaign appearance of the year — with incumbent Gov. Rick Scott on Friday. Scott spokeswoman Jackie Schutz said that Bush and Scott will visit a local business in the predominately agricultural area of Homestead, Fla., on Friday morning. Mitt Romney active in Florida, other states, amid buzz of 2016 run: Former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., went to bat for a Republican congressional hopeful in Florida this week and will turn his attention to flipping a seat for the GOP in the U.S. Senate in the days to come as buzz continues that he will make a third try for the White House in 2016. On Monday, Romney, the GOP’s presidential nominee who came up short against President Barack Obama in 2012, endorsed Miami-Dade School Board member Carlos Curbelo who is running in the Republican primary… Read more 

League of Women Voters signals it intends to keep fighting new congressional maps: The groups that successfully sued to have Florida’s congressional districts invalidated by a court are pledging to keep the legal fight going until lawmakers craft a radically different plan. The Legislature on Monday passed a new version of the map that makes minor changes to seven of the state’s 27 congressional districts, but doesn’t make major political alterations in terms of which party would likely hold onto the seats. That isn’t good enough, said the League of Women Voters and Common Cause. Read more

Health insurance for Fla. government employees gets another look: Compared with other states, Florida’s health insurance plan for government employees is about average. It doesn’t have the cheapest premiums or the most expensive. The state is generous to its employees, but not to an extreme. The implementation of federal health care reform has caused more states to analyze spending. A national study released Tuesday provides a snapshot of each state, including how much public workers pay for health coverage and what they get in return. Read more

Atwater ramps up social media on campaign trail: Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater is already way ahead of his competition as he seeks reelection. For every $1 his Democratic challenger collected in campaign cash, Atwater has raised $166. Still, Atwater is campaigning in earnest. In recent weeks, he has taken advantage of the power of the incumbency by traveling the state to talk about fire prevention and unclaimed property — part of his official duties — in between campaign stops.
