Obama appointee deleted subpoenaed emails; blames ‘sloppy recordkeeping’

The way the Obama administration loses emails, it might be wise to go back to typewriters and carbon copies.

The Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday it lost more emails, perhaps for good, involving the account used by Marilyn Tavenner, head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Fox News reported.

The emails had been requested by House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa as part of an ongoing investigation into the botched Obamacare rollout.

Already exasperated by the Internal Revenue Service scandal and the Justice Department’s stonewalling in the Lois Lerner affair, Issa said it “defies logic” that so many Obama administrators fail to obey federal recordkeeping rules.

“Yet again, we discover that this administration will not be forthright with the American people unless cornered,” he said, according to Fox News.

Health and Human Services Department officials told Fox News that the vast majority of the committee’s requested emails are available, that there are no chronological gaps and that there is no effort to conceal information.

In a letter to the National Archives, Health and Human Services Department officials blamed sloppy recordkeeping for Tavenner’s missing emails. The mishap was uncovered when agency officials began gathering documents requested in a House Oversight Committee subpoena.

The letter was sent Thursday – 10 months after the emails were requested.
