‘They asked us to put up or shut up’: Senate candidate Chris McDaniel files challenge to primary results

U.S. Senate candidate Chris McDaniel filed an official legal challenge to the June 24 Republican primary election where his attorney says he defeated incumbent Thad Cochran by more than 15,000 votes.

“They asked us to put up or shut up. Here we are,” McDaniel said in a news conference on Monday , according to WPAT News.

McDaniel’s lawyer, Mitch Tyner, outlined in the challenge claims of more than 15,000 illegal or questionable votes. Allegations include 250 pages of affidavits that allege 3,500 crossover votes, ballots cast for the Democrat in the first primary and again for the Republican in the runoff, cannot be counted, according to CNN. McDaniel lost by more than 7,600 votes.

The formal challenge was filed with the Mississippi Republican Party’s executive committee and could end up in court. Tyner said the committee will “have no choice but to recognize Chris McDaniel as nominee of the Republican Party” once the evidence is reviewed.

But Mark Garriga, Cochran’s campaign attorney said in a statement the McDaniel claims are “baseless” and will have to “pass the burden of proof that the law requires.”

“The filing of this challenge marks the point where this matter moves from an arena of press conferences and rhetoric into a setting where nothing matters but admissible evidence and the rule of law,” Garriga said in the statement, according to CNN.
