In what may seem to many an unprecedented if not revolutionary step, a senior Democrat actually had the cojones to differ with his imperial president.

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said on Wednesday that the United States should provide “certain types” of lethal weapons to Ukraine’s military, The Hill reported.

“We should allow them to have types of lethal equipment, which are not the most provocative, but which are defensive,” Levin told reporters after a closed-door classified briefing.

Levin suggested ammunition and surface-to-air missiles, which are defensive in nature, due to increased Russian aggression and the Pentagon’s widely reported belief that Vladimir Putin continues to send advanced weaponry to the rebels.

The 80-year-old senator said he disagreed with Obama’s refusal on Tuesday to supply Ukraine’s Defense Minister with arms, and his assessment that “the issue, at this point, is not the Ukrainian capacity to outfight the separatists.”

“What the president said is not satisfactory to me,” Levin stated, “when he said ‘we’re hoping for a peaceful outcome.’”

Too little, too late? ISIL persecution of Christians ‘top priority’ of Obama Administration

Longtime hawk Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told reporters that Ukraine’s shopping list included body armor, Humvees and F-16 fighter jets, while noted commentator Charles Krauthammer has been calling for months for Obama to supply Kiev at least with sophisticated electronic jamming devices, so the Russians and separatists could not shoot down aircraft.

In his July 24, 2014 column, Krauthammer wrote, “Regarding Ukraine, his [Obama’s] detachment borders on dissociation…When he says Putin has placed himself on the wrong side of history in Ukraine, he actually believes it.”

Krauthammer then listed meaningful, concrete steps Obama could take, but would not take, because he was “on the right side of history.”
