Illegal immigrants may flow into the U.S. unfettered, but don’t even think about trying to bring in a vehicle that does not meet the Environmental Protection Agency‘s safety and emissions standards.
That is, unless you want to be on the receiving end of a Homeland Security SWAT-style raid on your home.
A North Carolina couple purchased a Land Rover Defender over the Internet last year, a model that typically doesn’t meet stringent EPA guidelines, WBTV reported.
According to the CBS affiliate, there is a “quirk in the law” that allows vehicles 25 years old or older, and some importers will change the Vehicle Identification Number to meet this requirement.
“They [Homeland Security agents] popped up the hood and looked at the Vehicle Identification Number and compared it with a piece of paper and then took the car with them,” Jennifer Brinkley told WBTV.
“It’s just unnerving, the way they did it,” Bill Brinkley said.
WBTV reported that six or seven law enforcement vehicles turned out, “almost like a raid.”
The couple have 35 days to appeal the seizure, and stand to lose more than $60,000 that they invested in the vehicle.
All to protect the air you breath, assuming you don’t succumb to the multitude of diseases pouring across the southern border with Mexico.
