A Vietnam War veteran is being forced to shut down his California furniture shop benefiting needy military families, according to local TV station CBS13.
Working from his home in the gated Lake of the Pines community just outside Sacramento, Dennis Kocher donates his time, talents and personal resources to help families from nearby Beale Air Force Base. But a recent rule change passed by his homeowner’s association could mean shutting the doors on his home shop indefinitely or face a fine of up to $1,000.
“I don’t make a profit,” Kocher told CBS13. “The money I spend is my own money, my own time and talents, and I build it to give to the Beale.”
Kocher obtained a business permit in 2012 allowing him to operate the shop at his home, but “now they’ve come back to me and said I’m producing odors and noxious fumes,” he told CBS13.
The association said the complaints are coming from neighbors, but those who live near Kocher sent letters of support, asking the association to allow him to continue his charity work, according to the affiliate.
Kocher has stopped providing the service to those in need, using his time to fight for the ability to continue his construction projects in the future.
“I’m going to keep that fighting spirit,” he said. “I don’t give up.”
A Beale Air Force Base official plans to accompany Kocher when he appeals the association’s decision at an Aug. 5 board meeting, CBS13 reported.
