Sheltering minors who enter the United States illegally is a big business – and Uncle Sam is paying the bill.
According to KEYE TV, one Austin-Texas, based nonprofit has received $120 million from the federal government so far this year to shelter unaccompanied minors.
Southwest Key Programs, a 501(c)3 organization, is the “largest provider of services to unaccompanied children in the United States,” according to its website.
“Our programs encourage the development of personal and academic skills while facilitating permanency for these refugees,” the website states.
“Permanency” being the key word here.
The site goes on to say that, “Over 85,000 unaccompanied children enter the United States every year coming from countries all over the world such as Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, China, and Honduras.”
According to its IRS Form 990, the “nonprofit” is growing, with $54 million in revenue in 2010.
