Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater is asking New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to clarify “glaring errors and misstatements” in a marketing campaign that calls New York a better draw than the Sunshine State.
“People have been coming here for hundreds of years trying to sell us snake oil as a cure for yellow fever,” Atwater told “Your World” host Neil Cavuto Monday. “So we’ve seen this before.”
In a letter sent Friday, Atwater began by thanking Cuomo for spending his state’s tax dollars on advertising in the Sunshine State, adding that Florida will soon “surpass New York to become the third largest in the union.”
“However I feel compelled to point out some of the more glaring errors and misstatements in your ‘Open for Business’ and ‘START-UP NY’ ad campaigns,” Atwater wrote. “These advertisements portray an image of New York that simply cannot be supported by facts, particularly in comparison with Florida.”
Atwater’s letter mentioned how CEO Magazine recently ranked Florida the second best place to do business, while New York ranked 49th. The Tax Foundation, meanwhile, ranked Florida’s business climate fifth in the nation, while New York ranked 50th.
In closing the letter, Atwater took one more swipe at Cuomo, reminding the New York governor that even though Florida’s population is poised to move ahead of New York’s, the Sunshine State’s budget spends nearly 80 percent fewer dollars.
“I would be happy to assist you further in clarifying and correcting your data, and am delighted that New York has rediscovered the wisdom of developing a healthy business climate,” Atwater wrote. “I wish you the best of luck, and remember, the welcome mat is always out in Florida.”
