A Democratic state senator wants Democratic stalwart Bob Beckel to resign from Fox News because he used the term “Chinamen” on air before quickly correcting himself last week.
In the rough-and-tumble world of politics, Sen. Ted Lieu showed very little tolerance for epithets he regards as injurious. Beckel must depart post haste, the California lawmaker said Saturday, according to the LA Times.
During Fox’s popular program, “The Five,” last week, Beckel said in reference to an aspect of the complexities of immigration, “As usual, we bring them over here and teach a bunch of Chinamen – Chinese people – how to do computers and then they go back to China and hack into us.”
Twitter had a field day with the left’s overreaction when an intern at the Huffington Post tweeted that there was an “office-wide gasp” following Beckel’s slip.
Lieu, who is campaigning to replace retiring left-wing U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Beverly Hills, went overboard in his response. “We should all be alarmed by the racist, xenophobic comments by Fox News host Bob Beckel,” he said in a statement.
“His comments have no place in America, and this is at least the second time he has used racial slurs. He must resign immediately,” he demanded.
Beckel’s hacking remark was in a reference to the most recent report of Chinese hackers infiltrating a U.S. government agency and stealing personal information on federal employees.
Lieu contended that since he is “one of those ‘Chinamen’ with ‘oriental’ eyes that immigrated to America and majored in computer science,” and also served in the U.S. Air Force, that justified his call for Beckel to resign.
Apparently however, State Sen. Lieu did not major in the First Amendment.
