No thanks: Gov. Perry refuses Obama’s invitation for ‘handshake on the tarmac’

rickperry0703President Obama will arrive in Texas Wednesday for Democratic fundraisers in Dallas and Austin, but Republican Gov. Rick Perry won’t be there to greet him.

The White House invited Perry to meet Obama on the tarmac when he arrives, the governor’s office said, but Perry refused, according to the Huffington Post.

Instead, the governor would prefer to meet with Obama privately.

“I appreciate the offer to greet you at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, but a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas,” Perry wrote Monday in a letter to the president. “I would instead offer to meet with you at any time during your visit to Texas for a substantive meeting to discuss this critical issue.”

Perry blasted the president’s handling of the border crisis Sunday, saying that Obama does not “care whether or not the border of the United States is secure.”

“I have to believe that when you do not respond in any way, that you are either inept, or you have some ulterior motive of which you are functioning from,” Perry said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Perry warned Obama in 2012 that the crisis on the border was growing, but received no action from the White House.
