D’Souza responds to reports that Costco is removing his book; backlash begins

Politics made its way past America’s storefronts last week, when Costco decided to pull all its copies of Dinesh D’Souza’s popular book, “America: Imagine the World Without Her,” from its bookshelves.

The bestselling book that spawned a film by the same name had soared to the top of Amazon.com’s Political Commentary and Opinion list, but its anti-Obama viewpoint didn’t jibe with Costco co-founder and Obama crony Jim Sinegal, WND reported.

On July 1, Sinegal ordered Scotte Losse, Costco’s book department inventory control specialist, to remove all remaining copies from the shelves by July 15, according to WND.

Most Costco stores WND contacted on Monday had already pulled “America” from the shelves, while others said it was scheduled for removal in their regularly scheduled inventory changes today or Wednesday.

Costco hasn’t made any official statement on the reported removal of the books as of Tuesday.

Sinegal, a big donor to the Democratic Party, spoke at the 2012 Obama nominating convention and was known to have cultivated close ties to the president. Over the course of Obama’s presidency, according to the Washington Post, Costco contributed $100,000 to Obama and $100,000 to his super PAC, Priorities, USA.

D’Souza reacted with surprise when contacted by WND, saying, “If true, this would be very odd.”

“We’re in the process of finding out what’s happening,” he added. “I look forward to getting to the bottom of this and continuing the strong relationship my publisher [Regnery], and I have always had with Costco and their millions of shoppers.”

News of the book’s removal quickly spread, and a backlash has ensued.

Costco shoppers are venting their anger on the company’s Facebook page, threatening to boycott their stores and calling for customers to request their membership fees back. Here is a sample:
