Black Caucus to Sen. Thad Cochran: You owe us big now, we will collect

U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran’s Republican primary victory will come at a price.

Pointing out that his win over tea party favorite Chris McDaniel came courtesy of the support from the black vote, the Congressional Black Caucus is seeking some old-fashioned payback.

“Absolutely we have expectations,” the caucus’ chairwoman, Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio,  told Politico.

Cochran and his supporters assiduously courted the black vote, insinuating that McDaniel would turn off the federal spigot on their assistance programs.

Now, caucus members want his support for federal food stamp funding, stronger assistance programs for Mississippi’s poor blacks, funding for black colleges and an end to new voter ID laws.

“My hat is off to Sen. Cochran for being as desperate as he was, to actually go out, and up front, go out and ask for these votes,” U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga, told Politico. “Those votes were delivered, and I’m hopeful he will be responsible and responsive to the voters that pushed him over the top.”

Fudge called Cochran “a very decent man,” saying, “I also think there comes a point in time where every single elected official has to do what’s best for the people he represents, and his state is 35 percent minority and poor.”

In other words, we scratched his back; now he has to scratch ours.
