U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., is well known for making up the rules as he goes along, but who knew that he also makes up his own statistics?
Hastings posted a tweet Friday that claimed one in six Americans has HIV and doesn’t know it. A statistic that is factually incorrect, as he would soon find out courtesy of a few astute Twitter users.

Not only is Hastings wrong on his facts, he’s also wrong to think that he could quietly delete the tweet as if it never happened. Twitchy documented a few of the responses that served as a reminder:

What Hastings was most likely trying to say is that about 18% of those infected with HIV in the U.S. — one in six — are unaware of their infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
