IRS contracted with outside email archiving company; forgot to mention it?

Ensuring that the saga over lost employee emails won’t end soon, an intrepid Twitter user has discovered that the Internal Revenue Service at some point had a backup email service.

After the IRS continued to insist that it had somehow lost years’ worth of emails by beleaguered former official Lois Lerner and six others, @Morgenr dug up a 2005 announcement from the Sonasoft technology company saying it had won a contract to back up the IRS’s emails.

According to, the contract covered “automatic data processing services,” provided by a company whose motto is “archiving done right,” the Reason Foundation’s online magazine,, reported.

In 2009, Sonasoft even sent out this tweet advertising the IRS as one of its clients:

According to

The extent and exact details of the service that Sonasoft provided to the IRS aren’t clear. But the company advertises its email archiving solution as “ideal for small and medium businesses, government agencies, school districts, nonprofit organizations using Microsoft’s Exchange Server.” And a document posted on its website describing its services says that its system “archives all email content and so reduces the risk of non-compliance with legal, regulatory and other obligations to preserve critical business content.”

Sonasoft connection and IRS contract details first noted on Morgenr’s Twitter account.

The revelation casts an ugly shadow on IRS Commissioner John Koskinen’s testimony before Congress on Friday, when he insisted that the missing emails were gone for good. Among the many questions still unanswered is this: Why has Sonasoft remained silent throughout the ordeal?

Obama golfs, Biden and press play with squirt guns – who the hell is running the country?
