Vet of Iraq, Afghanistan fighting for Pledge of Allegiance in college gov; offensive to foreign students?

The power of patriotic publicity is paying off.

ufofwpledge0618newWith the help of conservative websites that have given his Rocky Mountains battle a major push, a six-year Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and Iraq is winning a fight to make the Pledge of Allegiance part of the student government at the University of Wyoming.

Appearing on “Fox and Friends” on Wednesday, Staff Sgt. Cory Schroeder – who is also a member of the student Senate — told host Brian Kilmeade he ran into resistance to the Pledge since he first broached the idea.

He said he was told the Pledge could be offensive to some foreign students. However, since the story was covered on the website Campus Reform, and Schroeder’s appearance was scheduled on Fox and Friends, his path seems to have gotten a little easier.

In an email to Campus Reform, the Senate vice president denied the group was concerned about offending international students and that it planned to work with Schroeder to include the Pledge as part of its meetings.

On television Wednesday, Kilmeade asked why there was such a problem with including the Pledge, a routine part of government meetings throughout the country. Kilmeade called the idea a “layup”; and Schroeder agreed it should have been.

“My thoughts exactly, sir,” Schroeder said, betraying his years in the service with the formal address.

“It takes 15, maybe 20 seconds to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. I don’t think that that timeframe of something should be written on the order of business. We don’t need that on the agenda, we just give the opportunity to say it.”

Schroeder said the “small gesture” of the Pledge was important to vets like him.

“It’s extremely important to me,” he said. “And I feel like it’s a small gesture for them to let me recite the Pledge of Allegiance … and give the opportunity for others.”
