More lost emails: ‘Plot lines in Hollywood are more believable,’ say Congressmen

Continuing to utter excuses that defy logic, Internal Revenue Service is now being accused of a cover-up.

Days after insisting that two years of former official Lois Lerner’s emails disappeared in a computer crash, the agency now says email communication from six more employees are also missing. Among the misplaced correspondence are emails from and to a top staffer for the IRS’s White House liaison, the Daily Signal reported.

“It looks like the American people were lied to, and the IRS tried to cover up the fact it conveniently lost key documents in the investigation,” House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., and House Oversight Committee Chairman Charles Boustany, R-La., said in a joint statement.

With the White House and the IRS commissioner stonewalling, despite promising “full cooperation,” Camp and Boustany called for an independent prosecutor with “full access and full authority to investigate every angle of this case.”

“Plot lines in Hollywood are more believable than what we are getting from this White House and the IRS,” they wrote.

The two congressmen were particularly incensed that the IRS only notified Congress on Friday of what it knew in February — that it could not produce the emails, which many believe will show that the agency used confidential information for political purposes.

In a tense briefing Tuesday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest dismissed the uproar, saying, “You’ve never heard of a computer crashing before?”

As more than one lawmaker has noted, none of this passes the smell test.
