Amid the growing catastrophe that has become the southern border with Mexico, currently being overrun by thousands of unaccompanied illegal immigrant children, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., opted to clarify his support for immigration reform.

In a Breitbart News exclusive, the potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate said characterizing his position as amnesty “is simply untrue.”

“What we have now is a lawless border,” Paul wrote, adding that President Obama‘s “lawless executive orders legalizing people who came here illegally” serves as “a beacon for more illegal immigrants.”

“I am for immigration reform because I am against allowing 12 million more illegal immigrants into our country,” he said. “If we do nothing, 12 million more illegal immigrants will come. We must be in favor of reform—smart reform that starts with border security.”

Presenting a plan he called “Trust but Verify,” which calls on Congress to vote yearly on whether the border is secure or not and looks to modernize our visa system, Paul said his plan “will not give the president the authority to simply declare that the border is secure.”

Paul stressed that we are “a nation of immigrants,” and that we “should have open arms to immigrants who want to come her and work hard to make a new life in a free nation.”

“I support legal, not illegal, immigration,” he added while noting that the current system is broke.

Then again, who doesn’t support legal immigration?

Nevertheless, with tens of thousands of illegal immigrant children flooding the border with Mexico and border patrol agents struggling to cope with the influx, the evolving humanitarian crisis will likely make it all the more difficult to pass immigration reform.
