Popular Florida eatery tells vet ‘his kind’ not welcome; backlash follows

Robert ThompsonAn eatery in South Florida bit off more than it could chew when a veteran was told “his kind” was not welcome.

Robert Thompson, a 20-year Navy vet who served in Iraq, visited the Old Key Lime House in Lantana, Fla., on Saturday and was told to remove a leather vest because they do not allow “gangs or colors” at the restaurant, WPTV reported.

The vest was covered with patches associated with his military service, such as a large patch depicting his affiliation with American Legion Post 180, according to the local NBC affiliate.

“You don’t see anything that’s derogatory,” Thompson told WPTV. “You don’t see anything that’s intimidating. All it is, is just a bunch of bright colors.”

But the manager saw it differently.

“He [the manager] goes, ‘we don’t want you here, we don’t like what you stand for,'” Thompson said. “I looked at him and just went, ‘Wow.’”

Thompson shared his experience on Facebook afterwards and the story took off.

As fate would have it, the owner of the restaurant and his daughter are both veterans, and the manager who made the comments was suspended, WPTV reported.

“He shouldn’t have been out there speaking,” manager Katherine Kenyon. “We apologize for that. We welcome them [bikers and veterans].”
