House Republicans will investigate into the Obama administration’s deal for the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan pledged Friday.

Speaking at Virginia’s Republican convention, Ryan said that as long as the Senate fails to pass legislation from the House, the
GOP should work to hold President Obama accountable, according to Politico.

“I’m part of the IRS investigation,” Ryan told about 600 convention attendees. “We’ve got the Benghazi investigation, the Veterans Affairs investigation, and we’re going to do an investigation about this troop transfer with the Taliban. So we’ve got a lot on our plate.”

Ryan said party unity is essential if Republicans if they want to take the Senate in 2014 and turn Sen. Harry Reid into the minority leader.

“We agree on the same principles. We actually all agree on the same policies,” he said. “Every now and again, we disagree on tactics. So it’s very important that as a party we put those differences aside, we put them in perspective, and like Mel Gibson said in that great movie, ‘Braveheart,’ ‘We need to unite the clans!’”

Ryan used part of his speech to endorse Ed Gillespie who is facing a 4-way primary for the seat held by Democratic Sen. Mark Warner. Gillespie has held numerous positions in Washington, from Senate parking lot attendant to advisor to former President George W. Bush.

“It would be kind of neat to see him go from the Senate parking lot to the Senate floor, wouldn’t it?” Ryan said.

Ryan planned to conclude his family trip to Virginia, by visiting James Madison’s home, “Montpelier,” and the Civil War battlefield,
according to Politico.

“I’m not just saying this to patronize you,” Ryan said. “I really love Virginia.”
