Bergdahl platoon’s exclusive with Megyn Kelly

Americans still trying to get to the bottom of the prisoner swap that traded five high-level Taliban terrorists for one suspected Army deserter got an on-the-ground version of events this week when platoon mates of freed Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl sat down with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly to discuss the exchange.

“Not worth it.”

Those words were from team leader Evan Buetow, who served in Bergdahl’s platoon, but they were the consensus of the six men who joined the “Kelly File” interview.

That’s not all they agreed on.

All considered Bergdahl a deserter. All faulted Berdahl for apparently acclimating himself to Taliban captivity – tales that he had converted to Islam and joined the Taliban as an enemy of the United States are unproven at this point.

But to hear these men speak is to get beyond the chattering of pundits or MSNBC’s lefty echo-chamber, where libs talk about how a disillusioned soldier might be a sympathetic character merely by being fed up with the war.

They don’t come off like fire-breathers; this isn’t a squad of Rambos. They sound like normal young Americans who accepted an extraordinary job – and meant to carry it out.

“We all took an oath,” Buetow told Kelly. “Any time you’re in a combat zone, it’s not an easy time.”

As the men who found Bergdahl missing from his unit on June 30, 2009, they know first-hand the trouble his disappearance caused the unit.

And they said there’s a big part of this equation a lot of Americans are missing. Those five Taliban leaders built their careers terrorizing Afghan men and women, not Americans.

“We can all agree, within a year they’re going to be back in Afghanistan, destroying everything that we worked – and the whole military has worked – to build up,” said Josh Connelison, a medic with the platoon.

And as to the Bergdahl swap?

“We need to get him back, he’s an American,” Buetow said. “The price that we paid? Not worth it at all.”
