The Bellingham High School mascot is called the “Red Raider,” but who knew it was because the bird of prey was blushing so.
An anonymous parent attended an awards ceremony at the Washington state school with her 17-year-old daughter, and was shocked at how vulgar the event was, KOMO reported.
According to the mother, there were a joke about a priest having sex with kids, and categories titled “the horniest stud” and “the horniest girl,” with a sex toy offered as the prize to the lucky “stud.”
“I sat there with my mouth open in shock and the final straw was when a joke was told on stage about a teacher, a lawyer and a priest on a plane,” she told KOMO via email. “The plane was going down and the teacher says we have to save the children. The attorney says ‘F*** the children!’ and the priest says ‘OOOOH..Do we have time for that???’”
The mother left after hearing the joke.
“WE need to get the word out there that THIS is the kind of TRASH that’s being taught in our schools,” she wrote. “I am so shocked right now I am in tears.”
Teri Grimes, a teacher for three decades, was responsible for the event and issued a formal apology.
“I deeply apologize for some very inappropriate comments and actions made during our drama students’ end-of-the-year awards ceremony,” the teacher said in a statement.
KOMO reported that district officials are “still evaluating the incident,” but that Grimes is not currently facing any discipline — she’s set to retire at the end of the school year.
