Former U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Oliver North said the Obama administration should be asked if a ransom was paid to the Taliban on top of the release of five senior enemy combatants to secure the freedom of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
“Was there a ransom paid?” North asked Tuesday while discussing Bergdahl’s release with J.D. Hayworth, co-host of Newsmax TV’s “America’s Forum.”

“Did the government of the United States, either directly or indirectly, finance a terrorist organization?” North asked. “I’m talking about a fiscal, financial money transaction, in this?”
“I’ve been there and done that more times than I care to talk about and the world knows it,” North said after describing how exchanges of this type take place.
In a later appearance on Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show,” North said Bergdahl was being held by the Haqqanis, a terrorist group with connections to al Qaida, and was not a prisoner of war.
And he was even more insistent that a ransom was paid.
“Someone paid a ransom,” he told Malzberg. “Whether the Qataries paid it, or some big oil sheik, or somebody used our petrodollars, but there was a ransom paid in cash for each one of them, my guess somewhere in the round numbers of $5 or 6 million to get Bergdahl freed. I know that the offer that was on the table before was close to a million.”
